Spain

A-Law International Law Firm Belgium for legal advice and dispute resolution in Spain. “It was, however, from Spain, and not from Arabia, that a knowledge of eastern mathematics first came into Western Europe. The Moors had established their rules in Spain in 747, and by the tenth or eleven century had attained a high degree of civilization” - W. W. Rouse Ball

Why trade or invest in Spain

Spain is an important market with 46 million potential consumers and 60 million tourists/year.  Spain is to be approached as a bridge to access markets of Southern Europe, Latin America and North Africa.

The economic recovery of Spain has started in 2013 and is already visible in the export sector, but also in business investments and in the real estate sector.  Spain’s top export product groups consist of vehicles, machines, engines, oil, electronic equipment, pharmaceuticals, plastics, fruits, iron and steel, clothing.  Most of Spain´s inward FDI has been channeled into the services sector with outward FDI mainly driven by large, productive companies.

As regards geographic distribution, Europe and the United States (albeit to a lesser degree) continue to be main investors in Spain, even though developing countries are increasing penetration. Most outward investment is destined towards Europe and Latin America.

Some particularities of the Spanish law and the Spanish legal system you should know

The Spanish legal system belongs to the continental law system. However, it is highly complex because there are different levels of regulation (EU, national level, “Autonomous Communities”).

The European level is highly relevant in commercial and regulatory issues, but the rules of the Autonomous Communities have a considerable impact on civil law (in some regions through the “foral” law) and fiscal law, and in various relevant economic sectors.

Economic and legal assessment should therefore be part of the legal budget of any potential investor or trading partner in or from Spain.
