Laos
Laos was once one of the world’s poorest countries. Now, this small, landlocked country of 6.6 million people with a GNI per capita of $1,600 is among the fastest growing economies in Southeast Asia and Pacific region.
Why trade or invest in Laos?
Sustainable growth
Growth prospects are generally favorable. Natural resources - forestry, agricultural land, water, and minerals - comprise more than half of Lao PDR’s total wealth.
GDP growth averaged 7 percent over the last decade, with increasing use of the country’s natural resources – mostly water, minerals and forests – contributing one third of output growth.
Need for FDI
Infrastructure development and economy are highly dependent on regional demand for its finite natural resources. Even though the Lao economy has been growing rapidly in recent years, it remains relatively undiversified and heavily dependent on foreign market demand for its natural resources, particularly mining, hydropower and forestry.
Potential niches
Construction and services also expanded as resource rents spread to the rest of the economy and growing regional integration boosted tourism and attracted foreign investment.
Banking, telecommunication, transport, insurance, agriculture,… are potentials.
Some particularities of the Laos legal system you should know
As a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Lao PDR is increasing its integration into the regional and global economy. The launch of the ASEAN Economic Community at the start of 2016 will further liberalize the movement of goods and services, capital and high-skilled labor in the regional block.
Lao PDR officially became a member of the World Trade Organization since 2013.
