China's first anti-domestic violence law took effect

The Law of the People's Republic of China on the Anti-Domestic Violence was officially implemented from March, 1. The law is China's first legislation on the anti-domestic violence.

The Law specifies the definition of the domestic violence and includes the cohabitants into its protection scope. With respect to the protection of the domestic violence victims, the Law provides that where a victim concerned may apply to the people's court for personal safety protection writ due to suffering domestic violence or facing real danger of domestic violence, the people's court shall restrict the behaviors of the respondent for the sake of the applicant' personal safety. In addition, the Law provides that institutions such as schools, medical institutions and residents' committees bear the compulsory reporting obligation once they spot clues of the domestic violence and encourages employers and the whole society to intervene in the domestic violence affairs.
